A while ago for the second and third act of my novel I split each scene I had into notecards. Then I ordered all of the notecards. I wrote the number down on each card.
Then I shuffled them every which way, I put them all out in their new order and then moved the things that definitely had to change for the time line, and fiddled with it from their disregarding the numbers. Here is how it turned out.
For a comparison of how the linear number relates to how I decided to incorporate the ideas of a story:
1-7
2-18
3-25
4-20
5-11
6-10
7-9
8-23
As written-linear given numbers
This is a lesson that logic does not answer every question the right way. Sometimes, its a lot different from the real possibility.
I highly enjoyed this exercise although it did take me around four or five hours to order everything and then write down the final order, a list I haven't really used by am glad I have as I tend to lose old notecards. Want to keep all my ideas written down. Anyway I'm preparing to do this again as I near the middle of Act two and the descent towards the third act.
